Nutrition news from around the world:
Could a diet higher in protein protect against fatty liver disease?
Researchers in this study have indicated that a calorie-reduced diet with a high protein intake compared to a calorie-reduced, lower protein diet may reduce the amount of excess fat around the liver. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is associated with excess fat in the liver cells and occurs in people who drink little or no alcohol. It is also often associated with other diseases such as type 2 diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure. If it is not managed or treated accordingly it can lead to issues such as cirrhosis in the longterm. In this study the liver fat in the high-protein group of participants reduced by almost 40% compared to the low-protein group while both groups lost overall body weight.
This research furthers highlights the potential benefits of following a high-protein, calorie-reduced and balanced diet for the treatment of fatty liver disease.
