What is your vision of yourself? What habits do you want to improve?
A Personal Message
Recently, I listened back to a podcast that not only sparked a renewed interest in habit formation but also reminded me of the fundamental components of how habits work. The podcast was the Finding Mastery podcast with Michael Gervais and Charles Duhigg.
Why We Do What We Do – In Life & Business
The Power Of Habit is a book written by Charles Duhigg, which was a key topic of discussion on the podcast. I read the book three years ago and it has helped me form strategies to help people I work with build new habits and routines to help them achieve their health and performance goals.
Where can YOU start?
It is important to reflect on your habits in order to identify what habits need improving or changing. A good place to start is by asking yourself the following questions:
What was interesting about this podcast was the number of layers there are to habits and routines. A deeper understanding of what drives our behaviours allows us to make more informed decisions about why we do what we do.
‘The power of self discovery’ and learning about yourself through reflection, journaling and measuring your behaviour change over time, are some of the main things that got me thinking about how I can help others and indeed improve some of my own habits.
Are You Doing This?
- Journaling
- Reflecting
- Creating awareness around your habits
When aiming to change a habit, an appreciation of the habit loop is an important place to start!
“The habit loop is a neurological loop that governs any habit. The habit loop consists of three elements: a cue, a routine and a reward. Understanding these elements can help in understanding how to change bad habits or form better ones.”
– Duhigg, C.
